Tedesco Outlines North South Highway and City Projects

Mayor Tedesco told the Common Council a start on the Bridgeport to New Town North South highway is hoped for early next year with bonds to be floated in 1959. He discussed school needs, park improvements, and a seaside comfort station near June 14 opening, plus enhanced services in the northern taxing district.

House OKs hike in federal pay

The House unanimously approved a 10 percent retroactive federal pay raise affecting more than a million workers across civil, military, legislative, judicial, and DC government roles. Estimated to cost about 342 million dollars annually, the action awaits Senate conferees after a voice vote. The measure follows Eisenhower signing a postal pay raise into law last month.

NATO Plane Seized by East Germany Over Baltic Coast

East Germany announced a Belgian NATO photo plane vanished with its pilot last Thursday and was forced down on the Baltic seacoast. The American built RF-4S jet carried weapons and camera gear and violated East German airspace. The pilot’s name was not released and a West German air force spokesperson said the plane was on a training flight moving toward Denmark when last heard.

Four Teens Recaptured After New Haven Patrol Wagon Escape

Four 16 year olds fled a Waterbury to New Haven police wagon during a transfer. Three were recaptured within hours. one remained at large before being cornered on West Rock and in Wilbur Cross parkway woods. King and Veturia faced Superior Court bonds for burglary charges. Mayell paid fines. O Neill held for breach of peace.

PARKING LAW CHANGES DISCUSSED BY POLICE BOARD

The Police Board asked the Common Council to alter the new overnight parking ordinance. They urged parking on Howe street be restricted to the west side only and proposed similar changes for Porl ier street and Maplewood avenue. The requests were referred to the ordinance committee for study.

Yeggs Break Into Bridgeport Diocese Vault

Police hunted burglars who escaped with about 2700 in cash after forcing open a safe in the Chan cery office of the Diocese of Bridgeport. Capt. Joseph A. Walsh said no fingerprints were found and the thieves wore welders gloves. The vault was opened by burning the door with a torch and three cloth bags containing Sunday cash were taken.

John Hersey Weds Barbara Kaufman in Private New York and Connecticut Ceremony

Pulitzer prize winning author John Hersey aged 35 of Southport Hulls Farm married Barbara Day Addams Kaufman of New York City yesterday at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church. The ceremony was by Rev. Stanley Lyon Houston with only family present. They will spend the summer on Cape Cod then return to Hersey's home. this is Hersey's second marriage and Kaufman's third.

Woman breaks quiz cash mark on TV show

Elfrida von Nardroff, a one year old walking encyclopedia, became the all time high money winner on television quiz shows with 237000 total. She defeated two contestants on NBC Twenty One and added 21000 to her total. She beat Charles Hewitt and Emile Libresco both 21 to 0 as one of the high money winners. Previously Robert Strom held the record with 224000. Von Nordoff may return next week to decide if she continues.

Kilburn Captured Near Los Angeles After Utah Prison Escape

Justice Department announced the arrest of Quay Cleon Kilburn, a 34 year old on the FBI 10 most wanted list, in Los Angeles. He escaped Utah State Prison last October using a prison paper editor press card, planned interviews with prisoners near an outside honor farm, and used a false disguise. Kilburn was armed but apprehended with no confrontation. He used the alias Clary Lydell Kilburn and carried forged ID. fingerprints matched his. He was taken into custody at 836 Sanborn St. Los Angeles, and linked to other federal fugitive matters. Explorer III, the U.S. Army satellite, is losing altitude and may end this month in a Cambridge report. Sputnik II is predicted to end by November with Sputnik ITE visible in mornings.
