Thousands lined Seaside park streets for the annual Memorial Day ceremonies under veterans of three wars. Flags, auto escorts, and speeches honored the Grand Army of the Republic, Spanish American War, and World War I veterans amid a somber note from recent losses.
British ambassador Sir Auckland Geddes addressed George Washington University graduates warning that Europe’s disentanglements threaten U S life and social fabric. He warned of a coming age of death of an era, urged focus on beauty service and truth to keep civilization from collapse.
About 50 000 veterans from five boroughs marched in Memorial Day parades led by Grand Army of the Republic veterans. Manhattan hosted the main march with Spanish American War veterans and younger servicemen. Reviewers included Lt General Nelson Miles and Major Hylan among others. Memorial services were held at Grants Tomb and aboard U S S President Lincoln for the 1918 loss of life in a German U-boat attack.

William Marcus Barnum Civil War veteran and assistant adjutant general of the Grand Army of the Republic Connecticut died at his home 42 Lindley street after overexertion preparing Memorial Day services. He suffered indigestion and a paralytic stroke prior to his death. Funeral in Stratford Union Cemetery conducted by Rev W H Day with G A R post services. Survived by wife Em Barnum four sons a daughter and a sister. Continuous obituary continued on page two.

Senate and House aim for final action tomorrow. policy requires growth of a U S merchant marine for national defense and domestic and foreign commerce.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed the top of a two and a half story Woodmont cottage belonging to George Tracy of Waterbury on the Shore front at Woodmer this afternoon. More than 20 men volunteered to extinguish the blaze after it had gained headway before firefighters arrived. Some contents were damaged by smoke and heat.
Chicago May 21 The Republican national committee began deciding contests from various states in an open session. Chairman Will Hays called the decisions judicial not political, reporting delegates from Arkansas and Alabama and postponing the District of Columbia contest until tomorrow. Florida’s three way race drew attention as the committee adjourned without a decision, expecting further progress by Friday under the guidance of Charles B. Winn of Detroit who acted as attorney.
Captain Edward O. Cragan head of the Detective bureau was suspended for gun matter after a police commission meeting on April 30. He will report to headquarters this morning, with charges for failure to report and disobeying orders cited. During his absence, Captain Charles A. Wheeler ran the Traffic bureau and Sergeant Thomas N Connery led the detective division.
Suner idtendent of Police Jotim H Redgate has been under suspension for over a month and is expected to be acted on at tonight's board of police commissioners meeting. Commissioners have kept silent on charges, noting none have been filed, while Mayor Wilson seeks resolution after weeks of anti vice crusade delays.
President Wilson met with Democratic National Committee Chair Cummings at the White House to discuss the platform, League of Nations, and preconvention funding. Cummings said the League issue was sharply defined and the president’s view had been set forth in a recent letter. Separate from this, a Senate subcommittee urged armed assistance to Mexico only after a stable government is established and urged recognition under specific constitutional conditions.
