Fire destroys rear store addition as crowd watches
A three story brick building on Main Street suffered a rear blaze in a store room, drawing a large crowd. Firemen confined the flames to the back section while maintaining undamaged offices on the second floor and a dancing studio on the third. The owner absent, clerks tried to reach safes as flames grew, and a cashier reportedly burned cash before escaping. Fire crews from two lines fought the fire, with a still alarm summoned for an automobile fire at Golden Hill and Main. Traffic halted for over 30 minutes as water was applied while investigators sought the cause, currently undetermined.

Contingent Fund Augmented By Short Term Notes
The Common Council plans short term notes to replenish the depleted contingent fund of the Board of Apportionment. Mayor Behrens notes the city faces demands far exceeding the remaining 823,261.68. Amounts include 10,000 for Police and Fire pensions, 25,000 for water bills, 10,000 for personal damage claims, and 8,000 for City court salaries, with 416,000 unexpended. About 10,000 will stay unspent from county tax appropriations and this sum will be redirected, via the tax board, to other uses.
