West Haven property owners at a special hearing will decide if the town should build sidewalks along the Milford New Haven turnpike to curb fatalities since the turnpike opened. A vote will determine whether sidewalks are feasible with state aid from surrounding towns reportedly reluctant to plan.
MADISON July 22. Governor Zimmerman vetoed the Duncan beer bill aimed at repealing a section of Wisconsin prohibition enforcement law. The Senate quickly engrossed a substitute to repeal the entire state enforcement law, shifting duties away from the prohibition commissioner to the attorney general. If passed, it ends state enforcement of the federal prohibition law.
The West Haven town meeting and Orange and Milford officials consider paving a sidewalk on the turnpike to cut walker deaths as State Highway Commissioner Macdonald declines funding help. A three-town conference outlines no funds or traffic signals, but a coordinated state police effort to curb speeding will run through August with patrols and notices to property owners.
Derby boy Stephen Charda, eleven, of Derby Avenue, drowned while swimming in the Naugatuck River last night. Rescuers recovered the body minutes after the incident and it was taken to the town undertaker for funeral arrangements. He is survived by his father, two brothers, and three sisters. the youth had recently visited relatives in the area and was described as a good boy who enjoyed swimming.
Boston showed a tumultuous welcome to Charles A Lindbergh at Logan Airport and later at his hotel. Police and guards protected the aviator as crowds surged, some fainted, with three hospital submittal rooms filled. Soldiers and police struggled to keep the Parkman Bandstand clear amid the glare and cheers.
Bridgeport residents watched a large Fokker transport lead an eastward flight followed by three Army escort planes from Mitchel Field. Lt. Albert J Hegenberger and Lt. Atlanta's wealthiest African American, Alonzo Herndon, died at age 68. Born a slave, he built a barber empire with 42 shops and numerous properties, including a Use Insurance Company and a cemetery stake. His estate, valued around $190,000, supports his monument and community impact.
In Larchmont July 22 two Southport girls aboard the Erne George Sherwood eight class boat rescued a drowning man who had fallen from a ten metre vessel during Leichmont Yacht Club race week. A 60 foot power boat rammed the Scorpio, forcing it to sail damaged. Schuyler Buddy Clark Jr and William J Barney Jr were saved from drowning. The Scorpio, a Pequot Star class boat, had a strong record this season and was favored to win prizes.
In Bucharest the five year old Michael of Roumania, crowned king, appeals for troops to remain loyal to his father and uphold the throne as his grandfather Ferdinand lies in state. The royal order praises Ferdinand’s reign and asks soldiers from chiefs to ranks to show discipline and devotion to Romania. A private letter from King Ferdinand to Premier Bratianu is noted.
Elusive figure King Carol of Romania remains silent after releasing a presa statement and showing no plan to exercise royal prerogatives. Former crown prince Joachim Ferdinand debated his own potential return while Camelia Lupescu visits sparingly as reporters and telegrams flood the Neuilly villa amid ongoing speculation.
New York reports that twenty four ticket agencies pledge to sell at no more than six tenths of a dollar above cost. The statement aligns with U S Attorney Tuttle as he probes Broadway ticket dealings. Miss May E Hawley of Newtown gave 3000 to Danbury Hospital in appreciation of care for Newtown residents. The gift supports the hospital campaign fund of 9,270,000 raised during the drive. Hawley, born in public spirit, previously aided Newtown High School.
Boston July 22 Governor Alvin T Fuller secretly visited Charlestown State Prison to meet condemned inmates Niccola Sacco Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Celestino Madeiros. He issued no public statement after the interview while observers noted Vanzetti appeared visibly downcast upon leaving the warden’s office.
The New Haven MCA will receive 15000 from the estate of Frederick J Kingsbury of New Haven. The estate, valued between 1500 0 00 and 2000000, was left in trust with widow Adele T Kingsbury and joint trustees. Mrs Kingsbury to receive income for life with principal access as needed. After her death the estate goes to Ruth Kingsbury Sargent and Frederick Kingsbury 3rd son, who receives his share at age 30.
Alfred Conrad son of Joseph Conrad was sentenced to one year in prison in the Second division court for converting to his own use $5000 entrusted by a trader for his father’s manuscripts. The judge said the name of a man who has adorned English literature should not be dishonored. Conrad is in the hands of money-lenders though he has an income of about 25000 a year. He inherits half the estate when his mother dies.
Hartford July 22 An Associated Press report notes a fierce controversy over whether Jack Dempsey fouled Sharkey before the deciding blow in their heavyweight bout. Officials, fighters, and observers debated on motion pictures and post fight analysis as to whether low blows preceded the knockout.
Jack Dempsey departed New York by car bound for Wilmington, then to New Orleans and finally Los Angeles, amid a controlled, rapid travel sequence. Tex Rickard had finalized plans for the September title bout with Gene Tunney, while process servers and a Pennsylvania warrant shadowed him on the trail.
Joseph A Dempsey of Union City was fined $20 for speeding in Hoboken as he claimed he hurried to New York to congratulate Jack Dempsey. He refused to swear on the Bible and insisted his speed was 12 miles per hour, not 35. He waited half an hour while a lawyer arranged payment.
In Red Bank the two and a half year old Thomas Holton died from abdomen injuries after a tame she-wolf escaped from his father's private zoo and attacked him and a playmate in the Holton yard. Henry Moreau survived minor injuries as witnesses and a maid screamed. The wolf, born in captivity about three years ago, had been considered tame and had reportedly mauled the boy before dying. The incident followed a past scare when a leopard escape near Holton last summer. The father Oliver W Holton and local authorities pursued leads outlined on Page Two.
