Hedson's Hotel in Exchange Place, Waterbury, burst into flames shortly after 11 PM and was nearly destroyed within two hours. A man, possibly Alex Canal of New York, died in the fire and several others were seriously injured including Edward Cramer, George Gagne, Oscar F. Farker, and F. G. Packard. Firefighters from 12 companies fought the blaze through the five story building as investigators began tracing the cause.

John R. Slim Cotter, United States Volunteer Lifeguard, saved a nine year old girl and her seven year old brother who sank in ten feet of water during Children’s Day at Pleasure Beach.
