Harbormasters clash over Newark Boston steamship line at Bridgeport dock
Harbor Master William A. Lamond says he cannot bar the Newark Boston line from using Bridgeport's city dock because the Harbor Committee of the Common Council has not granted authority. The line began two months ago, stopping three times weekly, until it paused pending acquisition of an extra boat. Rival lines and the New Haven Railroad steamboat line criticized the arrangement. The Newark line says freight between Newark and Boston is heavy and plans to resume in two to three weeks without a private wharf in view.
