Kawachi Battleship Sinks After Explosion Near Nagasaki

The Kawachi battleship of 21 024 tons sank in Tokoyama Bay on July 12 after a catastrophic explosion. Five hundred crew members died, leaving a crew of 960 officers and men. Built at Kure in 1912, Kawachi measured 500 feet in length with an 84 foot beam and a 28 foot draft. Armament included twelve 12 inch guns ten 6 inch guns eight 4 7 inch guns twelve 12 pounders and five 18 inch torpedo tubes.

Stolen Cruiser Found Beached at Seaside Park

A 31 foot yacht named The Cozy was found beached on rocks at Seaside Park by Arthur Huttman and Frank Denese after being stolen Monday night from Carl Anderson of Sheltonrand. George Mason salvaged the vessel to Vequonno Yacht Club and notified police. Shelton police aided the investigation.

The Stratford native and eminent lawyer John W Sterling died July 5 in Canada leaving a 20 million dollar estate. Yale University receives about 15.9 million, Bridgeport Hospital 10 thousand, Miriam Osborn Memorial Home 1 million plus added trusts for relatives and institutions.

Private Belinsky Killed in Action On French Front

Private Samuel Belinsky, 25, son of Morris Belinsky of 273 Lexington Avenue, was killed in action between June 14 and 39, according to a telegram. He was in the infantry and details are scarce. he came to Bridgeport years ago from Russia with his family, worked in vegetable packing, and drafted in September. Prayers were said at a synagogue following the telegram.
