German forces unleash tanks and giant naval guns to bomb towns behind lines as they press a renewed assault around Rheims. American troops hold key sectors along the Marne with counterattacks near Fossoy and Cha teau Thierry, while French and American units repel advances and take prisoners, including a brigade staff.
Meriden July 15 The Meriden Electric Light company announces a gate increase for current to 14 cents per E. W. hour. Weather report notes fair in New York with showers planned for the west portion. Almanac details include sunrise and sunset times and tides.
In the Board of Aldermen meeting last night Alderman John A. Cornell pressed for explanations of discrepancies in the finance report. He pointed to higher charges from outside contractors versus local firms, citing Leary Co.’s 260 feet of cement pipe at 7.75 per foot totaling 2015 and Fierce Manufacturing Co. supplying the same material at 3.47 per foot, a substantial difference. He cited further items from L Petruzzi, an outside contractor, for 110s in inch branches at a high price.
On the French front near Rheims German infantry did not press an attack, likely to wheel flanks around the cathedral city. French resistance along Champagne held firm as German efforts focused toward Chateau Thierry and the Marne corridor. Allied staffs remain confident in holding the line, with fighting reported near Doarmans and a broad 50 mile front between Chateau Thierry and the Main de Massiges.

Dynamite was the explosive in the device thrown early Sunday morning at the home of Carmela Simeng on Browning street Stratford. A chemist examination determined the substance. Chief William Nichols and state police pursue suspects to locate those responsible.
Rudolph Ellig of Princeton Street was taken to Hillside Home for observation after a breach of peace arrest. At police headquarters he became unmanageable and resisted so force was needed, four officers aiding to place him in a padded cell at the Hillside precinct.
Paris reports in War Office communique that American troops halted German river crossing southwest of Fossoy and launched a counterattack on the river’s right bank. Franco-Italian forces and French units held positions between Dormans and Rheims as German assaults persisted east of Rheims with heavy fighting near Reuilly Courthiery and Vassy.
The government selects a Jefferson street lot toward Seaview avenue for an anti craft base. Concrete emplacements for two anti air craft guns are nearly finished beside a baseball field, with barracks to house a company of Marines or other troops. A Searchlight Battery will cover the city at night. The area, about three acres, lies on land owned by James H. O Rourke and being disposed to the government. Fortified area regulations warn against photography.
Philip Warner a secretary with the Y M C A stationed near Chateau Thierry has come home to Stratford due to a family illness. He plans months of talks across the country to support the Y M C A before resuming service in France. He recalls cramped hut life with limited space in the trenches and the perils of gas shell alarms and mask failures.
German prisoners taken in a counterattack at the Marne near Fossey number between one thousand and fifteen hundred. They include a complete brigade staff. The action reflects a successful retreat forced by American troops advancing on the line.
An ordinance for the Bridgeport Producers market at Wall and Water streets imposes a fine up to 100 dollars for violations. Producers may rent stalls only to fellow producers selling garden produce, with selling not allowed before 4 a.m. Vacant stalls at 6 a.m. may be re-rented to others.
