Wire Strike Off After Labor Leaders Conference

Secretary of Labor Wilson announced an indefinite postponement of the Western Union telegraph strike after conferring with S. J. Konenkamp, president of the Commercial Telegraphers Union. He said Konenkamp assured no walkout would start tomorrow while Congress considers a wartime-control measure.

New Milford Boy Prisoner in Limburg Camp

New Milford July 7 In General Pershing casualty list today Lory M Couch member of Company G 102d Infantry appears among those taken prisoner by Germans on April 21 during action on the Western front in France and is now in a German camp at Limburg Germany Private Couch was 20 when he enlisted over a year ago New Haven trained at Camp Devens before overseas service His parents Mr and Mrs AH A Couch of Bridge Street have been notified by the American Red Cross that he is well cared for with food and clothing each week.

Italian flier killed performing for mission at Mineola

Sergeant Gianfelice Gino of the Royal Italian Flying Corps died in an airplane accident at Hazelhurst Field Mineola while nose diving for the Italian mission to the United States and Major General William L Kenly. Official inquiry considered. death attributed to low altitude and possible judgment error. Gino had trained American aviators and tutored Captain Antonio Silvio Resnati who died last May.

Those Who Work Most on Gardens Will Profit Most

Firemen and policemen lagging in tending the Lordship gardens near Bridgeport will not profit from others’ greater zeal. Secretary Orr and Chief Johnson visited Mallory war gardens in Danbury to implement a time card system, with each worker punching hours to ensure proportional profits based on time worked. About 80 acres are tended by factory workers who contributed $10 for seed and fertilizer, as did Bridgeport police and firemen.

Fairfield Eviction Sparks Official Inquiry and Threats

Fairfield plans an official inquiry into the eviction of 65 year old Mrs. William Coley as neighbors report a strange threat by an anonymous caller vowing to burn the Turney home and nearby shack homes within six months. Motorist Speeds Away After He Runs Over Man

Norwalk July 7 Special A heavy automobile struck Elihu Fenton of Southport as he lay unconscious in the road after a motorcycle crash on the Post road at Greens Farms. The driver failed to stop and disappeared in a cloud of dust as passersby shouted. Fenton was rushed to Norwalk hospital with a badly crushed right foot.

State Policeman Virelli Arrested For Not Moving

Sergeant Frank Virelli, a well known state police officer, was detained at the Third precinct after a confrontation with Patrolman James Foley on Fairfield Avenue. The sergeant claimed his authority and was briefly held before the mix up was cleared up, the pursued motorist remains at large.

Body Found Off Black Rock Shore After Week in Water

A man about 40 was found floating several miles off shore by a patrol boat from the Black Rock naval station. He was half clad, no ID, wearing a dark jacket and socks, blue eyes, five six, clean shaven. The body towed to the base and identified later by authorities.

Soldier Struck Dead by Lightning at Camp Devens

Private John S. Francis of North Adams was instantly killed by a lightning strike while in a tent at Camp Devens. Four soldiers were present, none injured. Francis enlisted in June.

Molds of Coins Seized in Alleged Counterfeit Case

Two United States Secret Service agents seized plaster molds of coins here yesterday and arrested Thomas Jackson of New York. Federal authorities consider the seizure highly significant though few details are available. Police headquarters declined to confirm the arrest or the seizure and federal agents did not comment.

Austrians Withdraw From Piave Delta Front

Vienna reports Austrian troops pulled back to the eastern bank of the Piave to avoid heavy sacrifices. Italians followed to the western bank. Four Men Hurt In Georgetown Car Crash

Four men from Bridgeport and Stratford were injured when a Ford struck a rock near the Cannondale line yesterday at 4:45 PM. Charles Wills and Rudolph Loth suffered fractured ribs and were admitted to Norwalk hospital. Harry Smith and George Loth sustained minor injuries. The car was wrecked, radiator and windshield damaged, and towed to Norwalk for repairs.

Soldiers Arrive To Drive Biker Trucks To Port

Soldiers from the Quartermaster’s corps arrived in Bridgeport from Baltimore to haul more than 200 motor trucks to the Lovomobile plant. The detachment, led by Captain Bert Jones, totals seven companies with 77 men and was stationed earlier at Jacksonville, Florida. They will depart Bridgeport within a day to begin the trek to An chibarkition nomt.
