Officers of the First regiment Connecticut State Guard start training at Camp Locke in Niantic today. They will be replaced next week by Second regiment officers, then Fairfield County troops encamp for instruction. Under trained U.S. Army instructors they learn defense warfare stunts and will draw supplies this afternoon. Battalions formed from lieutenants and staff officers will drill four days with interim technical schools.

In June Bridgeport health inspectors closed 15 restaurants for sanitation violations or financial actions. Large quantities of food were destroyed including 82 cans of vegetables 43 pounds of pork and beef three barrels of new potatoes three barrels of vegetables 19 quarts of strawberries and 1785 dollars in Phiaubing. Plumbing upgrades in kitchens cost 1.7 thousand dollars. Sanitation improvements also affected tenement houses with 17 unsanitary toilets abolished 28 new toilets installed 20 sanitary sinks torn out and 41 white enamel sinks installed. Ice cream and confectionery stores largely complied with inspector orders after 816 inspections 140 reinspections.

Bridgeport will form a legal advisory committee to aid drafted or soon-to-be drafted service men and their dependents. Justice Wheeler said the panel, appointed likely next week by the Bridgeport War Bureau under the state Council of Defense, will offer free guidance.
