Surplus of Beef Grants Short Term Reprieve to Cattle
Colorado cattle gain new life as surplus canned beef prompts canner cows to graze instead of slaughter. After 1919 high output and 1920–21 market decline, packers bought lower grades at $2.50 to $2.00 per 100 pounds, with some as low as $1.50. The trend secures three to six more months of grazing for these cows amid uncertain livestock futures.
