Churchill Wins Vote as Labour Fails on Yalu Bombings
London July 1 AP Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the Conservative government defeated a Labour motion of censure over preflight knowledge of American air raids on Yalu river power plants. The vote was 300 to 270. Churchill warned against angering American public opinion during a presidential year while Selwyn Lloyd announced a senior British officer will serve as deputy chief of staff to Gen. Mark Clark to better coordinate future operations. The Labour lefts argued the raids risked peace talks and war with Red China, but Churchill defended patience shown by the United States and criticized internal Labour leadership disputes.
