Saugatuck Seeks Postmaster Amid Salary Dispute
Saugatuck weighs appointing a postmaster as incumbent Patrick Oates earns 1100 dollars yearly plus 144 for clerk hire. Local official Mr. Morton argues the clerk pay is insufficient for onion weeding tasks and cites stamp revenue at two cents, thrift stamp duty, and rising phone use as factors reducing mail and stamp sales. With no strong local applicant, a salary increase and Oates reappointment are being urged as wires are sent to President Wilson.

Careful Soap Use Cleanse Hair Without Harsh Alkali
An advertisement advises against harsh soaps and shampoos that dry the scalp and damage hair. It recommends ordinary refined coconut oil as a mild cleaner, using one to two teaspoons to wash hair and scalp. The method produces rich lather, rinses clean, leaves hair soft, glossy, and easy to manage, with coconut oil available cheaply at pharmacies.
Machinists Charge Ordnance Officer Overstepped Powers
In Bridgeport 1918, machinists accuse Captain Hepburn of exceeding authority by posting a notice at Liberty Ordnance Plant that draft-age workers who walk out would be drafted immediately. Hepburn says actions were by direction of the Chief of Ordnance and cites a government stance on strikes and draft policy. The notice, dated June 26, warns loss of exemptions and automatic move to class I-A if workers strike, and was read after a mass strike meeting.
