A German U-boat torpedoed the 11,000 ton hospital ship Llandovery Castle about 70 miles off the Irish coast on June 27. The Canadian government chartered vessel carried 258 aboard including 80 Canadian Army Medical Corps and 14 nurses. only 24 survived. The commander claimed it was sunk for carrying American aviation officers and munition stores, while lights and Red Cross markings remained visible during the attack.
