Eight astronauts died in a test at Johnson Space Center Houston Texas during the Apollo program rehearsal. Officials said the escape system could not have saved them as a gantry wrapped around the rocket and hatches remained sealed ten minutes before a simulated liftoff.
New York AP reports three other American astronauts died in line of duty before Friday’s triple tragedy at Cape Kennedy. Theodore Freeman, 34, died Oct 31 1964 when a goose struck his jet trainer during landing at Ellington. Eliot Lee Jr., 38, and Charles Bassett II, 34, died Feb 28 1966 when their jet crashed near St Louis. Bassett and Lee were Gemini 9 backups replaced by Stafford and Cernan who later flew Gemini 9 and conducted a space walk.
A 12 year old boy found a rock in a Milford yard that authorities call a possible meteorite. The object left scattered pieces around it and requires chemical tests to confirm its origin. The Konstantine family awaits results to determine if it truly fell from the sky.
A Felton tornado injures seven people and damages over a dozen homes and a service station. One house was lifted five feet from its foundation. The twister touched down near U.S. 13 across from Felton Public School where 1150 students were unaffected. One window blown out at the school.
