Four Story NY Building Collapse Kills Workers

A four story building under demolition in New York collapsed during work Thursday. Cracking sounds preceded a roar as workers inside were trapped. Two workers died, with one later dying of injuries, and others were injured as crowds gathered.

City Is a Target In School Mixing Drive

Bridgeport is among 17 target cities in an initial drive by the United Church of Christ to promote public school integration in Northern cities. A church spokesman in New York announced the plan last night. Rev. L Alexander Harper, director of school and community integration for the church's Christian Social Action Council, spoke.

Eastbound Storm Brings Rain to Bridgeport Area

A severe winter storm that swept the Midwest is expected to bring rain to Bridgeport today and tonight with temperatures falling to seasonable levels after recent warmth. The Weather Bureau at Bridgeport Municipal Airport said the storm center would be near Pittsburgh early this morning, moving northeast about 20 mph and likely to pass south of Bridgeport later today.

Former State Representative Ray mond C. Lyddy 42 a Democrat of 526 West McKinley avenue gained a seat in the State Senate yesterday in the special election to fill a vacancy in the 22nd Senatorial district comprising the western half of Bridgeport He won by about two to one over Republican Abraham Gordon The Socialist Albert M Perrocco trailed but polled over 500 votes The official vote announced by Town Clerk Frank J Verribli showed Lyddy 5628 Gordon 2164 Perrocco 517 Lyddy succeeds Sen John J Relihan who died December 15 The total vote 8301 was just under 24 percent of the district 34758 Lyddy headquarters termed this a good turnout in view of the fact only one office was at stake Gordon lost to Relihan in last November's regular race for the same office The previous total was 24242 Lyddy carried all 11 precincts in the district including the five Assembly districts 130-134 and carried Fifth-B district with 934 votes to 394 for Gordon.
