Market Ends Day With Listless Trading Amid Fed Influence
New York stocks edged along in listless fashion with a slight uptick in activity and steadier foreign exchange. Traders noted weak opening in British and other remittances followed by partial rebound as pressure from offerings eased. The Fed board deflation policy was linked to the day’s mood, while reserve board action on discount rates was expected after earlier moves by the Philadelphia bank. Prices drifted down then fluctuated within narrow ranges, closing steadier on short covering in steels motors and equipment. Total sales reached 11,250,000 dollars bar value with Liberty bonds and foreign issues softer.

Private operation urged for U S merchant fleet
A. F. Haines, vice president of Pacific Steamship, urged private operation of the American merchant marine under Shipping Board supervision at a Senate hearing on permanent shipping legislation. He proposed selling the fleet to private American operators via a federal merchant marine corporation with up to 2 billion dollars in 5 percent bonds to finance long term credits. He argued Americans cannot operate the vessels without federal aid and long time easy payments. The plan would keep all vessels under the American flag.

Complaint Hits Sale of Oil Stock in Connecticut
Complaints against individuals in Connecticut alleged to have sold oil stock to investors in the state have been filed with Attorney General Healy by Bank Commissioner I. D. Sturges. One complaint was presented personally to the bank commissioner, the other through Hartford Chamber of Commerce secretary William M. Wead. Healy ordered state police to investigate and furnish copies of ads advertising unlicensed stock. The attorney general ruled bond sales need no license if no stock bonus is involved. The Shekomeka Oil Company, said to have sold 1000 shares at ten cents each to A. T. D. MacFarlane, was denied by secretary M. M. Tracy of the company.
