Senator Hiram W. Johnson announced eastern headquarters in New York City to aid his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. He pledged a vigorous fight to win delegates in every state with a presidential primary. A strong New Jersey organization is already at work, and he will tour the Midwest starting next Sunday, including Missouri for a special election February 23 to replace Representative Alexander.

The Hague January 22 The foreign minister says Holland will loan Germany 200 million florins for ten years with possible renewal. The loan is secured by coal and requires 10 million florins to be spent in Holland or the Dutch Indies. Parliamentary ratification is required to finalize the loan.
Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor urged the House Rules Committee to block the Sterling and Graham measures. He argued existing laws already punish sedition and warned the bills would stifle working people while failing to deter radical activity.

Vincent Brothers offer a two hundred dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of thieves stealing from refrigerator cars on railroad sidings. Several thefts include potatoes onions and other foodstuffs carried away by a motor truck on Carbon street near Tranistan avenue viaduct. A night watchman observed a gang at work, with a truck ready to depart, after an attempted repair and entry to the car.
Fairfield January 22 Special Deputy Sheriff William H. Gould arrested John Dolinsky a taxicab driver of Bridgeport on suspicion of involvement in stealing $25 worth railroad tickets from the station last Sunday night He attempted to cash three New York bound tickets stamped with the dating stamp also taken Dolinsky said he bought the tickets from his wife and claimed to have tried redeeming them at Bridgeport but was directed to Fairfield Detective Edwin Morehouse questioned him regarding the source of the tickets.
George W. Morris, 43, named to join the Fire Prevention Bureau as lieutenant by the Bridgeport Fire Board at a special meeting. He will serve with Thomas F. Magner, Hose No. 8, in duties aligned with other bureau inspectors. Dr. William H. Curley appointed department surgeon for the year starting April 1920.
