Britons face higher taxes and limited expenditure as the government plans a 334 percent hit to pay and 998 million in next-year cuts. The policy aims to shift 824 billion into export production over two years amid a Tory no confidence vote and Labour left wing motions criticizing social services.
London AP Conservative Leader Iain MacLeod said if the Tories win they may resume British forces slated for withdrawal from the Far East. He argued Britain would maintain a presence in the region and protect vital interests in rubber shipping and trade in Malaysia Singapore and the Middle East.
The Common Council schedules public hearings for February 5 at 7 pm in City Hall. Topics include sewer construction on Toreen Drive and abandoning eastern Housatonic Avenue for Bridgeport Brass. Abandonment would affect a divided street from Grand Street toward the city edge.

A Medicare cost funding seminar is scheduled today at The Travelers Insurance Companies in Stratford. The event focuses on extended care facilities served by Travelers, a fiscal intermediary under Part A of the Medicare program, and is co sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Extended Care Facilities Inc.
John Cole of the Jelenko company will address the Bridgeport Dental Association at a 7 o'clock dinner tonight at the Three Door restaurant 1775 Madison Avenue. Dr Elias N Fass, president, says Cole will discuss topics vital to dentists and members will vote on bank budget continuants and by law amendments. Plans for Children’s Dental Health Week Feb 4-10 will be announced.
The Guatemalan wave of violence left five Americans dead on Tuesday and a second day of fighting. U.S. officials reported Col John Weber Jr. and Lt Cmdr Ernest Munro were killed near the INS headquarters as a clandestine FAR communique blamed U.S. missions for instigating guerrilla killings. Several other Americans were wounded or detained as authorities tightened martial law.
The annual event honored ten firms for blood bank contributions with Post Publishing cited for outstanding support. Speaker Mr. Krakow praised Red Cross volunteers for fostering dialogue amid divisions and discussed its evolving international negotiating and relief roles.

A murder charge was filed in Connecticut over the killing of Bloomfield police lieutenant Beaupre. He, a 12 year Bloomfield officer and father of three, was slain in Springfield. The suspect’s return to Connecticut was unlikely until the case’s final disposition.
The speaker criticized North Vietnam as too noisy to be sincere, arguing that if peace were desired proposals would be transmitted via secret channels. He alleged the timing aims to embarrass the U S ahead of Johnson’s State of the Union. He warned bombing agitates North Vietnam and may seek a spring offensive. He noted rival pro-Peking and pro-Moscow factions in Ha Noi.
Officers captured three suspects after a coin burglary in Fairfield. A vigilant chase through Kings Highway and nearby streets ended with arrests near Fiske Street and at the Ballantine Beer distribution center. Suspects offered no resistance and were taken to police headquarters.
