Bitter Cold To Continue Grip on Area

The bitter cold will persist through Saturday with teens today and subzero readings tonight as a high pressure system from northern Canada keeps the area in a freeze. Snow and rain for the weekend have been erased but gas shortages persist for nine firms, halting some operations and idling about 200 Bullard workers.

Biggest Fake Money Ring Smashes in U S History

New York police and federal agents report the largest counterfeit operation in U S history was disrupted. About $4 1 million in fake $100 bills were seized December 29 at Kennedy Airport in boxes intended for a buyer paying at least 10 cents on the dollar. Three men were arrested. authorities expect more arrests. The fake notes were described as passable reproductions bearing Franklin’s portrait and the group likely planned to ship them overseas.

Russell Neary was re elected chairman of the Park Board. Mayor Curran proposed using college students as part time park policemen to boost manpower for the Barnum Festival tent theater during warm weather. The city currently operates two park policemen and three night watchmen.

Harborview Towers the Bridgeport Housing Authority project for seniors was delayed from this month to March 1. Deputy director Helen Vangel reported to BHA chairman M. Burns Fatal to Widow in Norwalk Fire

A 65 year old widow Irene Sterling of 7 Blake Street was found dead on her back porch after a small fire in her Norwalk home. Fire officials say her clothing ignited from an electric range burner as she moved outside to escape. Investigators note she started a fire in a pile of papers near the living room back door and the blaze consumed her clothing before firefighters arrived. An 11 year old newspaper boy Glenn Dalmas first observed the blaze at the rear of the house.

Brown seeks asylum at Cuban Mission after street confrontation

Black Power leader H. Rap Brown took sanctuary inside the Cuban Mission to the United Nations after police tried to arrest him during a street incident. Brown, calling the action Gestapo like, said whites would not intimidate blacks, then left the mission with an aide and a girl for an undisclosed destination. The Cuban delegation protested police conduct and a summons for harassment was sought, with Brown’s lawyer stating they would fight it if served.

Pasadena Calif AP Surveyor 7 halted by a mechanical hitch as a soil radiation analysis box failed to reach the lunar surface. JPL said signals released the 5 by 6 by 7 inch instrument from a door three feet above ground but a ratchet likely caught the suspension line. Controllers planned to jar the device loose with an extendable scoop similar to the tool used on Surveyor 3 to begin scratching operations. If the box cannot be lowered one of the major experiments aboard the final unmanned lunar scout would be blocked.

Attack Fails On GI Post Near Saigon

Saigon area combat leaves heavy Viet Cong losses as American infantry and artillery repel a five hour assault northwest of the city. In Binh Dinh Province near the coast another clash yields high enemy casualties. US figures report 103 enemy killed, five Americans dead, twenty eight wounded. A separate Mekong Delta action lasts ten hours with 18 American dead and 50 wounded. Viet Cong losses are 26 killed.

Area police urged to swap officers for fresh faces

Fairfield County Chiefs of Police met in Westport as Mayor Hugh C Curran urged a man for man exchange of policemen among Connecticut departments. He said smaller cities cannot hide identities and proposed sending officers to other communities while inviting theirs to Bridgeport to gather information. Curran pressed for citizen support to back enhanced police protection and cooperation.

Hartford Democrat Richard Yedziniak won the State House seat in a special election, defeating Alda Provera 510 to 153 in a 4,295 voter district. The contest filled the vacancy after Rep. Marie Bworak resigned to move to Wethersfield.
