Fifth human heart transplant performed on retiree in New York
In a nine hour two in one procedure at Maimonides Hospital Brooklyn surgeons transplanted a heart into 57-year-old Louis Block, the fifth such operation in 37 days. A small balloon helper heart supported pumping as the new heart could not sustain circulation. The operation joined earlier transplants by Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz and followed the world’s first transplant in 1967. Block remains in reasonably satisfactory condition.
