Nature provides music in winter as trees crack from sap expanding in cold snaps. Bart lett Tree Expert president Robert Bartlett notes frost cracks occur in oaks, maple, gum, ash, willow and horse chestnut, often on the south trunk side during January and February when sap rises and freezes.
The article notes frost can crack a tree trunk up to 25 feet high creating wide entry points for fungi and disease. As sunlight warms, the crack is said to close, though repeated cycles may threaten the tree's health. Based on expert Mr. Bartlett.
