President Wilson told the Italian parliament that balance of power is impossible and urged a thoroughly united league of nations as a substitute. He argued that past balances failed and that cooperation among nations should replace power blocs.
McAdoo testifies before the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee on railroad policy urging return to private management if federal control ends soon. Cummins and Kellogg press for keeping government control 21 months after peace, while McAdoo cites railroad resistance, intrastate rate disputes, and morale risks as reasons to end federal management early. Weather report notes overcast, colder in New York and New England with fair Sunday and low temperatures.
American Army intelligence officers report from January that in the area held by Third Army units most towns have sufficient roads to endure winter. The most critical shortage is fat supplies. county districts are better supplied with food, though surplus often moves to cities by trading.
Mrs. Mary Catlin Nugent filed for divorce from Frank Nugent after he shot toward her father and terrorized the household. She testified they wed in 1905, he treated the home as a shooting gallery since 1907, and she feared living with him. Judge Greene granted the divorce.

On January 3 at Fire Island the Northern Pacific stranded with 2900 soldiers aboard. By nightfall 2641 troops were ashore or on naval vessels, 259 more carried ashore yesterday. 200 wounded left aboard, weather thwarted removal. Coast Guard and Navy cooperated in a famed Atlantic rescue with one overturned lifeboat and no loss of life.
Jacob S. Epstein files in Superior Court a damages suit seeking 14 050 against a Connecticut trolley company after an August 7 collision on Bradford Avenue Hewitt Street left his right leg crushed and amputated. He alleges the car lacked a fender and no warning gong sounded.
A fire at 79 81 Center Street destroyed property valued at about 4000 as flames roared through walls and floors of the tinder like building. Mrs Mendelsohn elderly mother of Levi Mendelsohn and her sons Louis and Jacob helped evacuate relatives as Lawrence Finkelstone alerted neighbors. Fire crews from Hose Company 4 Engine 4 8 Chemical 2 and Trick J battled the blaze for hours, with flames spreading between walls before breaking through the roof.
NEW YORK. Jan. 8 Officers of the troopship Siboney report that at sea a soldier in full trench gear leapt overboard and could not be saved. Private William Balinsky of Philadelphia listed as missing after the incident. Also aboard was Lieutenant T. S. Jacobs of Westport Connecticut who went to France 27 months ago and joined the Lafayette Escadrille with three German planes shot down and the Croix de Guerre.
Patrick McCartan signing as Envoy of the provisional government of Ireland said Ireland severed political ties with Britain on December 28 after Sinn Fein won a large parliamentary victory. State department officials said they knew nothing of McCartan. A New York reception planned to honor McCartan, Liam Mellows, and Diarmait Lynch, all Sinn Fein figures, was announced for Hotel Alpin. Mellows and McCartan faced prior arrest in 1917 over a German-backed plan. Mellows later indicated as a Sinn Fein leader.
Bonjon case proceeds with two more arguments heard yesterday in Airfield County. State’s attorney and assistants present as trial moves toward a verdict this afternoon. Jurors from Weston must be in Hartford next Tuesday, court adjourned for a Saturday session. Bonjon’s mental state linked to alcoholism cited. defense argues insanity predates September 7.
William McLennan was elected president of the Building Commissioners yesterday afternoon. Daniel M. Rowland was re elected clerk. Six building permits were granted totaling 16400. They include three family houses on Brooks Street for William F. Chathis and alterations to a brick building on Airfield Avenue for W. A. Smith. A private garage at 67 Allea Street for Karl Seifert and a one story brick building on Stratford Avenue for Gertrude Sniffen.
In Rome on January 3, a large gathering in the parliament house hosted President Wilson. Senators and deputies gave a formal ovation as the President addressed the assembly with a prepared speech.
British and Dutch governments have reached agreement on the status of the former German emperor. A despatch from The Hague quotes a message of welcome and reflections on postwar order. The speech discusses this war’s true aims, new independence for oppressed peoples, and the need for pure motives in future diplomacy.
Seeley unanimously re elected president of the Board of Appportionment and Tax at the 1919 organization meeting. Mayor Wilson presided and Sigmund Leewith nominated Seeley, with Burnham seconding. The board approved several transfers including 800 from bridge bonds to City Hall. Additional budget items were approved for police and recreation departments.
