Bridgeport voters will pay 20.9 mills in property tax this year after the board of apportionment set final rates at 9 mills for District One and 1.9 mills for District Two starting April 1. The board trimmed from an initial 21.3 mills, saving $23,600 in District One and $40,000 in District Two.
Milford education officials debate removing French and German from high school courses replacing with English only. A board member argues to focus on English while retaining Greek and Latin as foundational study. Also included: a weather forecast for South New England and surrounding regions detailing a cyclone and temperature shifts.
Philadelphia February 26 United States District Attorney Kane says liquor cannot be sold to women accompanied by soldiers in uniform. He notes most such cases involve the soldier paying for drinks, violating the law against selling to army men in uniform. He suggests waiters refuse service when a man in uniform is present.
Senator James K. Watson of Indiana warned at Bridgeport the danger lies in not limiting presidential war powers to the duration of the war. The 10th annual Manufacturers' Association banquet at Stratfield hotel featured Gov Marcus H. Holcomb Lt Gov Clifford Wilson Col Samuel McRoberts and Dr Francis H. Green among about 450 guests. The program opened with songs by a 50‑voice chorus and Speidel's orchestra, with prayers and introductions preceding speeches.
In a Reichstag address Chancellor von Sternberg stated central powers aim to grant self government to Courland and Lithuania provinces. He denied intent to occupy Methonia or Livonia and said eastern operations seek peace fruits with Ukraine while defending homeland and economic freedom.
Rep Schuyler Merritt of Stamford Rhode Island urged Congress to grant the President full power to fix railroad rates under the federal control bill now before both houses. He argued rate fixing must stay with the executive to avoid crippling costs and bankruptcy in the rail system.
Washington Feb 26 With Taft among two public representatives the capital labor conference to frame a national war policy adjourned for a week as workers name the other member. Five from the national industrial conference board and five from the AFL join two public reps to form a 132 member body. Brandeis may be asked to serve as jurist. Meetings resume to outline subjects and reduce strikes hampering war production. Plans for district boards and wider department involvement are outlined.
In Albany on February 86 a record crowd filled the state capitol assembly chamber to hear William Jennings Bryan lead the Prohibition side in a five hour hearing on ratification of the federal prohibition amendment. Samuel Gompers, president of the AFL, supported by former Senator Bailey of Texas, argued against. The joint committees heard numerous speakers as the session ended with no decision yet indicated on when a report would be made.
City school board members prepare for March 11 session to press for a clear division of control in school affairs and to elect a superintendent for a term that may be limited. Samuel J Slawson’s role as chief of education is under scrutiny as contract terms are reviewed and possibly amended.
Y W C A workers in Bridgeport reported $7.07 percent of their $26,000 goal on opening day. Descriptions of meetings at Golden Hill Street followed, with Miss Betty Scott recounting French club work and relief needs, and George J. Cady urging sacrifice for democracy and a more active American citizenry. Subscriptions listed include N. W. Bishop, W C A industrial clubs, A. W. Burrith, Woodruff, and others, with a note that continuing efforts would press the drive forward (Continued on Page 20).

Three members of the Musicians Union were shot by Guido Tuzi, who had been ordered expelled for refusing to stand during the Star Spangled Banner at the Civic Auditorium. A. F. Less, F. Sciller, and Herbert Schultz were wounded. Less and Sciller in the leg, Schultz in the hand. Tuzi was arrested after firing six shots at union members during a confrontation at the union headquarters.
Special Investigator Heney shifts focus to butter and egg trade within the meat packing industry. J T E Hoban of Carrollton Missouri testifies that Wil E Priebe of Swift & Co. controls a poultry and egg division and owns Stamper & Co. in Missouri. Hoban warns packers may try to wipe out competitors, fearing loss of business and redress.
German aliens who registered with police must claim issued permits at headquarters by Friday night or face drastic action. Only about 160 had appeared by last night. Officials will identify claimants by fingerprint and list the permit, with cases of noncompliance to be dealt with severely.
Hartford Feb 26. Federal Food Administrator Robert Scoyille met with wholesale and retail grocers to discuss wheat flour sales and decided that consumers may purchase no more than a half barrel at a time.
Fifteen Remington Arms employees blocked a Stratford Center trolley marked for Devon, arguing with officials and police. Stratford Chief William Nichols intervened, ordering the car to Devon, as crews initially aimed to return to the car house. The protestors then faced transfers and delays amid a tense confrontation with company leadership.
Charles Wilson of 1460 Park Avenue loaded a flat to rent and was promised insertion in The Velooram-Post. The ad claimed affordable rent and quick exposure, with a note that after an initial appearance it should be removed to avoid overloading listings.
Washington notes German Chancellor von Hertling dodges the four Wilson peace principles and treats them as generalities, undermining any near term renewal of diplomatic discussions. Officials say Hertling avoids concrete proposals and signals little real commitment to advancing the peace plan.
Bridgeport ends late December closing limits after Local Administrator Carl I. Siemon ordered their repeal. Police informed merchants theater managers and saloonkeepers they may remain open. Saloons may be asked to close at 11 o’clock for a few weeks longer, but this is not yet decided.
