Judge George Wise reduced a $10 fine to $5 for Judith R. Mirton 23 of Bell Street after she pleaded guilty to leaving a car with the emergency brake off. The vehicle rolled 120 feet and struck another car on Boston Avenue. Wise also reduced Willie Sanders 34 of Nichols Street’s $200 penalty for driving with a suspended license by $150 after a traffic stop revealed the suspension.
The First Federal Savings and Loan Association of New Haven promotes Robert A. Petrillo from manager at 2801 Fairfield Avenue to assistant vice president. He resides in Branford. Nelson E. French, formerly Black Rock manager, now heads the Whitney Centerville Hamden office. Both keep branch duties with added executive responsibilities.
Police say George Meyer of Trumbull, 0, was charged with driving under the influence after a car linked to an alert for an illegal turn on Main and Fairfield crashed on Park Avenue near Cottage Street. He was treated for a hand laceration at police headquarters.
Strong winds up to 40 mph swept through Waterville Valley New Hampshire destroying the Waterville Inn at the ski area Thursday night. No injuries were reported as 200 to 300 guests evacuated safely to the new main building two miles west. Telephone lines were down and area communications ran on two way radio links.
A man died when he was hurled into Pike in a collision with a westbound trailer truck driven by Robert Lafleur 37 of Worcester Massachusetts. The truck dragged the victim a short distance. Police said no arrest was made. The deceased worked at Gateway Laundry Arch Street Greenwich Set. William Wallace supervised the investigation with Trooper Nicholas Oliveri assisting.
Tanjug reported a spreading struggle in Sinkiang Province with pro Mao forces seizing Urumchi on January 25. Fierce fighting left tens of dead as anti Mao factions distributed state grain and urged commune workers to quit.
A 32 year old Bridgeport woman Annie L Works of 29 Sixth street suffered facial burns when an unknown woman threw a container of lye through her door after a knock. Works was treated and released from Bridgeport hospital. Eyes reportedly not damaged. Police linked earlier dispute with Mrs Mary Booker of Stratford and noted Mrs Becker was at home during the attack. Investigation continues.
Dr Jesse J Englander a Bridgeport dentist urged the General Assembly Elections committee to back a change allowing Connecticut polling places to stay open until midnight for national elections He argued the change would protect ballot secrecy and counter early returns that reveal results to other regions before polls close
Leaders from the Conference of Mayors pressed for equalized per pupil aid of 220 dollars, with advocates arguing 180 dollars is bare minimum and 240 dollars would align Connecticut with the national average. They urged state funding to cover education needs and warned against tax breaks that would curb local support for stronger schools.
