Deny Degree to Artist Who Took Officers to Task
Philadelphia February 21. The University of Pennsylvania notified artist Joseph Pennell that his Doctor of Letters degree, voted April 2, 1917, will not be conferred at tomorrow's day celebration. Pennell, on the War department committee for official frontline artists, had criticized Canadian officers drinking at the Art Club while American officers were barred by army rules. Pennell, in a reply to Provost Edgar F. Smith, noted the provost had said the degree would be conferred tomorrow but the conferring was deferred to June due to protests. He had been in France during the last commencement period and could not receive it then.
