Fire Kills 25 at Manhattan State Hospital Ward on Ward Island

A massive blast from dredgers at Hell Gate caused a fire that killed 22 inmates and 3 attendants at the Manhattan State Hospital for the Insane on Ward's Island. Fire officials say the blast damaged insulation triggering a short circuit. 18 bodies recovered and many more presumed unidentified. Attendants and medical staff helped evacuate dozens as flames and a collapsing tank blocked exits in the west wing amid zero temperatures.

Judge Blakeman Dies After Long Illness in Hartford

Stratford town court jurist Frank I. Blakeman dies at 65 in Hartford hospital after heart attack during Winter Exposition. He led the Connecticut State Grange, served Stratford on the Board of Education, and was a state legislator in 1908 and 1904. His wife was at his side in his final hours.

Roudies Punch Motorman When Service Is Slow

Desiring to board a State street streetcar at the Wairfield avenue junction last night three youths angered by a delayed door rapped the glass. Motorman William Driaga said they warned him to hurry or they would break the glass. They later punched him after getting aboard and fled before police arrived. He was not seriously hurt. Officers sought the youths in uniform.

Baboon Arrested After Citywide Chase in New Haven

A young unidentified baboon caused a frenzied pursuit through New Haven streets attracting policemen firemen and a crowd of about 1000. The ape fled to a wooden stand and was captured by an officer who jailed it at headquarters. The sighting began on Oak Street as children gathered and the owner is being sought.

Norwalk Man Injured In Snowbound Car Crash

Andrew Drabek of 24 Glenwood Avenue Norwalk was seriously injured when a trolley on the Norwalk Bridgeport line struck his stalled car in a snowbank near the tracks. He was extricated and taken to Norwalk Hospital with scalp lacerations, possible skull fracture, and body injuries. Fire destroys New York film studio complex

A fierce blaze razed a three story Garlem building housing International Films and Cosmopolitihan Productions in New York on February 18. Property and films valued at about $1,000,000 were destroyed along with costumes and rare stage plays borrowed from famous collections. An elderly watchman rescued a monkey and parrot from the top floor. the bird died from singed feathers.

Brother of Murdered Man Found After 10 Year Search

Portland reports a long unsolved fratricide case from 1910 with Gustaf Sjogren murdered and brother Joseph Sjogren, later found via Hamilton Ohio police, admitting to being sought. Deputy Sheriff Axel Hansen said steps would be taken to bring Sjogren to trial. The case trusted with a 1912 shooting death and a boyhood disappearance.

Chief Johnson Acts To Avert Fuel Famine

Fire Chief Daniel E. Johnson imposed a rigid fuel relief plan to ease a winter coal shortage. Beginning at noon, engine houses will receive urgent coal requests as 40 to 60 peddlers report to fire houses to deliver coal to needy homes each afternoon. Police will survey needs, recording names and addresses of households in want, while police, fire officials and state authorities coordinate to distribute coal. A Telegram survey found many residents burning substitutes, with some still holding only a ton or two of coal and others unable to obtain fuel for heating.

Wise urges Jewish support for English policy in Palestine

Rabbi Stephen S Wise of New York defended British action in Palestine as just telling about his Holy Land tour from Nazareth to Jerusalem. Zero Weather Again In Bridgeport Record Low

A winter cold snap kept Bridgeport in a deep freeze with the 6 am reading at one degree below zero. Daytime high reached 18 degrees with temps dropping ten degrees by 8 pm. Forecasts suggested a slight temperature rise but continued cold wave conditions across the region.
