Bridgeport Pushes for Larger Public Utilities Board
Hartford Feb 17 Kendall Pierce representing Bristol and Plainville Electric urged the judiciary committee to expand the Public Utilities Commission by one member for cities over 25 000. He argued Bridgeport had not recovered from jitney issues and urged leaving the current commission alone. Opponents included Connecticut Manufacturers Association the telephone company and other utilities. Representative Cubelli of Bridgeport defended the bill noting public dissatisfaction with PUc decisions and said the bill would add balance by increasing commissioners who hear city matters. The Bridgeport Aldermen and New Britain mayor supported the measure but opposing testimony claimed major corporations led the effort. The commission was criticized for failing to satisfy Bridgeport residents.
