Norwalk police seek Special Officer Merron Marron after a Darien extortion incident in which two New Canaan youths were stopped for speeding and fined two dollars each. The officer, identified as Officer Wilson, allegedly demanded payment for leniency and fled Norwalk after suspension. Local and adjoining-town authorities coordinate to locate Marron.
John H Bartlett former governor of New Hampshire will be the principal speaker at the McKinley association of Connecticut dinner at the Stratfield hotel. Arthur F. Connor president announced the secured speaker after word from Colonel Rex B. DeLacour in Washington. Gene Tunney may attend as a guest, with details expected soon.
Chief William R Pennington and four subordinates were exonerated after a five hour closed meeting of the Safety Council at City Hall. The inquiry involved charges of neglect of duty in the Tullio case and the handling of Special Officer Hugh Marron who left the city after the Darien police requested a warrant. The panel, led by Major Anson F Keeler, heard that Tullio shot James Cola Jr. in Oakdale Pa and that bond and treatment of the victim were disputed. Pennington said law prevented forcing a statement and noted Tullio remained under surveillance.
A two passenger plane from Worcester to Hartford forced down in a swamp near Chaplin Center during a six o clock landing. Ice on wings and propeller caused loss of control injuring two unnamed passengers. the prewar craft wheel broke but no major damage reported. Pilot Percival H. Spencer head of New England Aircraft Corp. said a wheel broke during landing and the plane was otherwise undamaged.
Judge Walter M. Pickett of New Haven County Common Pleas rejects Young’s challenge to the 1925 statute granting the motor vehicles commissioner power to suspend or revoke operator licenses. The ruling finds no constitutional violation and views the statute as providing due process within the broader motor vehicle law.
A new building permit for a three to four story brick apartment house by William F. Chatlos at Courtland Street and Washington Avenue opposite Trinity Episcopal church was approved. The $95 000 permit updates prior plans after a prior 130000 permit on the site. No elevators will be installed despite a five story limit.
The New York New Haven and Hartford railroad paid the U S Treasury 22 380 000 plus interest as the final installment on wartime indebtedness. Originating from 64 000 000 due in 1930 and 27 000 000 borrowed 1930 39, government obligations totaled 4 000 000. Buckland says final liquidation came via bonds sale last December and a 40 036 700 preferred stock issue sold last fall.
Mrs Catherine O Leary Bartmabt Otter Brice rekon Yim bur tad to the scene. Mrs Barmmer, a telephone operator at the Waterbury railroad station, was believed drowned when the car skidded into a river between Waterbury and Naugatuck at midnight. Her husband was rescued and hospitalized with possible spinal injuries as investigators began probing the Beacon Falls incident.
Jone H Bartlett first assistant post master general will address attendees at McKinley tonight. Also noted are junior college evening registrants appearing, and a judge denies a husband's plea to withhold a wife's divorce decree.
North End property owners press for road repairs as part of an economy plan. Mayor Behrena urges minimal appropriations for 1628 1929. Board president Burnham vows to reduce the 29.3 mill tax rate as much as possible while aiding taxpayers. A Madison Avenue hearing features residents and Burneford avenue interest group seeking a 70 foot thoroughfare with city repairs within a year and waiving damage claims.
Ohio GOP leader Fred W. Warner warned that a Willis Hoover clash for the April GOP primary delegates could fracture the party and hand Ohio to the Democrats in November. Willis supporters said they were awaiting developments as Hoover backers pursued petitioners to enter the primary with Hoover’s name.
Eddie Cantor blamed for canceling the Ziegfeld Follies after presenting a doctor’s certificate of pleurisy in Philadelphia. Florenz Ziegfeld asked Equity for Cantor to be ordered back to work as 190 cast members were paid during the shutdown and show costs covered.
Waterbury coroner John T. Mongant rules Louis W. Leopold criminally responsible for deaths of Joseph and Moynihan in a Baldwin Street fire. Warrant issued after hours of testimony. Leopold held without action against Mrs Leopold as the investigation proceeds.
LA Feb 7. Psychiatrist Dr Thomas Orbison testifies Hickman is sane and the trial is needless pomp. He labels the insanity plea as an effort to avoid punishment and condemns the lengthy proceedings as costly and wasteful. Witnesses affirm Hickman’s sanity.
Washington Feb 7 Prohibition Commissioner Dorad Doran outlined a plan to require duplicate prescription blanks for doctors prescribing liquor to patients. The patient hands both originals to the pharmacist and the pharmacist keeps one copy while sending the other to the prohibition office monthly to tighten controls and deter unauthorized use.
In Rockville Beatrice Fuller, of Mayflower descent, wed Clarence Kellem, a Black man, after a flaming cross scene on Pillsbury hill. Rev George Brookes refused to marry them. Justice Earl Goshring conducted the ceremony at the Kellem home.
Havana prepares for Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh and the Spirit of St Louis to land at Camp Columbia at four o clock tomorrow as part of a goodwill tour. He travels from Fort Au Prince Haiti covering about 730 miles and will depart from Cub Hondsy returning to the field eight miles west of Havana. The airdrome has been readied by government workers and will show the Lone Eagle to the public in a suburban district overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
In Southington on February 7 a man learning of his son Mailsor’s death collapsed at his home. The father William Gaynor faced a court reading of a warrant as officers supported him. The elder Gaynor, reportedly drinking, allegedly shot his son after a dispute. the son carried to Bristol hospital where he died. The father remained in custody after arraignment.
