CPEC Sees State Deficit Rise to 94 Million
Connecticut Public Expenditure Council raises its deficit forecast to 94 million for the current biennium, up 17 million from September. Welfare costs drive the revision, with added deficits in teacher retirement, debt service, judiciary, and other areas. A TV program notes a possible 139 million gap, implying tax increases, while leaders say it's too early to forecast tax hikes and await the 1969 session.

LBJ seeks national auto insurance study and consumer protections
President Johnson urged Congress to authorize a comprehensive study of the auto insurance system and to enact new laws protecting consumers from diseased fish and poultry. He proposed an eight point program including truth in lending, radiation safety, crackdown on sales frauds, stricter boating safety standards, a consumer counsel in the Justice Department, and enhanced warranty policing. The plan envisions a broad federal role with state participation and potential subpoena powers to aid the review.
