Malibu Calif Dec 28 AP A third major fire rips through the Santa Monica mountains threatening vast areas of homes ranches and resorts. Lake Sherwood region evacuation urged as flames reach the crest joining the Malibu blaze. Six homes burned in Lake Sherwood with 100 homes surrounding the lake and thousands of acres scorched. Fire officials warn of serious risk to Los Angeles and Ventura counties as evacuation and containment efforts continue.

Alpert Clashes With Probers Over Board Records

In Boston on December 28 AP reports Pres George Alpert of the New Haven railroad clashed with a special investigative commission. He received a summons and the railroad sought a Supreme Court ruling on the commission's powers. Alpert's counsel filed a bill of complaint seeking an injunction to bar questions beyond the commission's remit and to require no disclosure of non specified records. The panel voted to compel Alpert to produce minutes and executive committee records next Monday, though he warned they contain sensitive negotiations.
