New German tax hits everybody during reform drive
Berlin reports Finance Minister Mathias Erzberger outlined sweeping tax measures in a two hour speech before the National Assembly. He warned against prewar individualism and urged a new era of shared duties, with three major bills on the table: national and local tax reform, income tax, and national emergency levy. The plan sets staged income tax rates from ten percent to a maximum sixty percent for incomes over five hundred thousand marks, granting states power to levy taxes within constitutional bounds.
