Washington Aug 28 Congress moves toward enacting a manpower bill broadening the draft age to 18 to 45. Senate and House conferees reach a complete agreement, striking out the work or fight amendment. Adoption by both houses is viewed as certain after minor final steps.
Five Bridgeport Fire Department members were granted leave from September 1 as they join the National Army. Named are Edward J. Dailey Thomas F. Wivan James R. Neary Timothy J. Mulroy and William Mulligan. The board also approved payment for St Vincent’s Hospital charges and Dr Andrew MecQueeney for Walter J French who suffered blood poisoning in the line of duty.

Firing resumed about 9 55 tonight with fifteen to twenty shots from the Mexican side. Alarm on the Arizona side led to troop mobilization and a crowd of civilians. Arrival of General Elias Calles in Nogales was reported to convey apologies from the Mexican government while Washington considered the incident closed.
National War Labor board awards approximately five cent hourly increases for about 50,000 workers in 65 Bridgeport war plants. A graduated scale lifts pay from 40 to 78 cents per hour, affecting men and women across occupations, with details conveyed to union official Gamuel Lavit by William H. Johnston.

In Vesle region fighting the Germans say they inflicted severe losses on American troops and captured about 250 men. General Headquarters in their statement today confirms the capture and casualty claims amid ongoing operations in the Vesle area.
Frank Wabideau of Milford, a minor, sues Roy Siemon, president of Siemon Hard Rubber Corp, for 10000 alleging his car driven by chauffeur John J. Bahan on Bastot Post road recklessly caused an accident June 10. The suit, filed in Superior Court, seeks trebien damages for injuries including a broken fibula and permanent disability.

The German retreat in France leaves munitions in Roye while French forces approach the Canal at Bethencourt Cressy Ognolles and Ecuvilly. General Humbert's army resumes the advance and reaches Vauchelles two miles from Noyon, signaling its fall is near.
French cavalry entered Nesle this morning with infantry occupying the town. The French Third army captured Dives and pushed eastward reaching the outskirts of Noyon. German retreat quickened in parts of the front southeast of Roye. Continued on pages two.
