Chicago mayor leads biggest Old Ironsides gift drive
Boston August 34 Associated Press The largest single donation toward rebuilding the old frigate Constitution at Charlestown Navy Yard comes from Mayor William Hale Thompson of Chicago. The $251 4252 check, via Thompson and a supporting committee, boosts funds to over $424 000 with $330 000 to $400 000 more needed to restore the vessel to its original condition. The “Constitution picture” sale continues to supplement funds as reconstruction plans proceed to place the ship on safe, sea-going condition for Atlantic and Great Lakes service after completion.
