Germans Gain At Lyspending Front As Americans Advance

American forces pushed along a four mile front near Lyspending and Frapelle in Lorraine. Despite 2500 shells and a German raid repulsed by artillery and automatic rifle fire, U S troops improved the line past the village. An American patrol near the WoEvre areas fought a lively engagement. one wounded man aided another to safety.

American patrols moved into strong positions on nearby hills but met no German infantry. Elmer W. Dewhirst Dies Prominent Local Businessman

Elmer Winton Dewhirst of the Dewhirst dairy died Saturday at his Madison Avenue home. Born in this city he led Pierre Manufacturing Company as president, built roads in the region, and later ran a dairy business. He served as chairman of the Sixth District Republican club and belonged to Bridgeport and Corins Linn clubs. Americans Welcome in Vladivostok After Seven Day Voyage

The first American troop contingent arrived in Vladivostok after a seven and a half day voyage from Alaska.
