American forces pushed along a four mile front near Lyspending and Frapelle in Lorraine. Despite 2500 shells and a German raid repulsed by artillery and automatic rifle fire, U S troops improved the line past the village. An American patrol near the WoEvre areas fought a lively engagement. one wounded man aided another to safety.
On August 18 the American and French bombardment intensified north of the Vesle as German heavy guns replied through daylight. American patrols moved into strong positions on nearby hills but met no German infantry. The action featured a high rate of American shelling relative to German responses and ongoing patrol activity along exposed barbed wire and trenches.
A Connecticut company reports orders to adopt a skip-stop system for street car lines across the United States during September. The plan, based on government guidance, would place about eight stops per mile in cities and suburbs, with four stops in each direction, changing residential service while leaving business districts largely intact. The move aims to save freight and improve efficiency, though details remain unsettled as executives study prior recommendations.

Other boards include 983 Broad Street West End districts 4 and 6 First Bridgeport National Bank Main and State eighth floor districts 5 7 Warner building 33 Fairfield Avenue room 406 North End districts 8 and 10 East Bridgeport districts 10 and 11 East Bridgeport Second Floor First Bridgeport National Building Main and State districts 10 11. Those 21 and older by August 24 register next Saturday if resident in Bridgeport. non residents register with their Bridgeport board and have card mailed to home town.
Toy Christvem of 1344 Bro Street Stratford was injured when struck by a car in Shelton. He suffered a fracture of both bones in the right leg and was taken to the Bridgeport hospital. the driver rushed him there then returned to Shelton to report the accident.
A Madrid dispatch reports Spain will seize any Spanish ship in a German port and torpedo threats loom if Germany does not satisfy Spain. The note, relayed via Paris and London, frames an ultimatum over the sinking of Spanish vessels and calls for wartime honor.
Rabbi Stephen Wise urged Connecticut voters to choose America and Wilson over Kaiser rule. Davis Hack entered Bernstein’s store and attacked Mrs Bernstein in a pocketknife assault. Her husband came to her aid and was slashed. Hack fled but was chased and trapped in the cellar behind the Howard avenue address. He was arrested by motorcycle officers and charged with assault with intent to kill.

Elmer Winton Dewhirst of the Dewhirst dairy died Saturday at his Madison Avenue home. Born in this city he led Pierre Manufacturing Company as president, built roads in the region, and later ran a dairy business. He served as chairman of the Sixth District Republican club and belonged to Bridgeport and Corins Linn clubs. Survived by wife and one son Joseph, the funeral is at 2:30 tomorrow from his home with interment at Mountain Grove Cemetery.
Judge Ben B Lindsey, Colorado’s famed juvenile court judge, arrives to speak in three meetings tomorrow. Two early sessions are for Remington Arms and Lake Torpedo Boat employees, then a public park address in the evening, with Lindsey sharing impressions from Europe and views on American soldiers.
Training at home for eligibles will be provided in New York with five thousand local draft boards to receive preliminary training. Organized by committees of the National Security League and approved by Provost Marshal General, the program offers ten-conpulsory lessons stressing military courtesy. Certificates of merit will be issued to those showing ability, serving as indices of qualifications as potential non commissioned officers.
British troops west of Armentieres extend their line 1 000 to 2 000 yards over a four mile front between Vieux Berquin and Bailleul. They push southwest of Merville and capture Outtersteen with 400 prisoners. An advance also occurs between Chilly and Fransart north of Roye.
The first American troop contingent arrived in Vladivostok after a seven and a half day voyage from Alaska. The men, in high spirits, crowded the rails and rigging as Allied warships in the harbor cheered them. Crowds on the waterfront were loud and amazed by the Americans’ noisy entry. The troops will remain aboard ship until other transports arrive. A Japanese contingent was reported en route to the air front. The dispatch also notes Allied advances on multiple fronts, including Lys, Somme, Vesle, and Lorraine, with prisoners taken and positions improved.
Maj Gen Henry P McCain, formerly adjutant general of the War Department, will command the 12th Division at Camp Devens. The change follows an earlier plan to have Maj Gen Harry Hodges lead the unit formed at Camp Devens, according to a statement by Gen March.
