Three Men Nabbed Near Powder Magazine at Hingham

Three men prowling near a powder magazine at the U S naval ammunition depot in Hingham were fired upon by Marine guards as they fled. One man was killed, another escaped with the wounded companion, and the third fled. An investigation was begun to determine intent to steal explosives with guards doubled and ammunition increased.

Fisherman Finds Dr Salmon's Body Off Race Point

The body of Dr Thomas William Salmon fifty one a New York psychiatrist was found floating off Race Point Fisher's Island by lobster fisherman Fred Maynard ending a search that began after he fell from his yacht Melabar II off Westbrook. Identification was confirmed by Edwin Salmon of South Norwalk son of the late doctor. Coast Guard patrols and boat drags continued off Westbrook as efforts to notify relatives proceeded.

Fears for two Oakland to Honolulu planes in ocean

Fears for the safety of two planes that left Oakland bound for Honolulu and the James D. Dole prizes grew as estimates show their maximum air time would be about 28 to 30 hours. Woolarog Pilot Financed Transoceanic Flight

Art Goebel risked his life to win the Honolulu air derby and funded his 3400 mile Woolaroc flight by borrowing against future prize money. He raised part from friends, sold belongings, then secured 8500 short and received help from Phillips Petroleum officials in Bartlesville to complete the funds. The Woolaroc plane, named after an Osage chief, uses a Lindbergh-like engine and holds 425 gallons of fuel.

Plane damages wing prompts governor’s return flight

In Plainville on August 17, Governor John Trumbull was flown to New York using a second plane after the first army craft damaged a wing on landing at Trumbull Field. Lieut. Goebel Wins Dole Air Race with Woolaroc in Hawaii

Arthur Goebel piloting the monoplane Woolaroc captured first prize of 28000 in the Dole air race Oakland to Hawaii, landing at Wheeler Field ahead of Martin Jensen in the Arena who finished second. Jensen's navigator Paul Schuter joined him, and Goebel’s joy was shared by the crowd as Mrs Jensen fainted and Goebel’s party was greeted by military salutes.
