Two youths drown after canoe capsizes off Fairfield Beach

Elton Hanson, 17, survives to describe the tragedy as two companions George Wilson, 21, and Harold Havenfeltz, 21, slip from an overturned canoe in heavy Long Island Sound waves near Fairfield. Their bodies remain missing as mothers, including Mrs Havenfeltz and Mrs Wilson, suffer severe grief at home. A rescuer, Charles Hamann, aided Hanson who was aboard a sailboat nearby.

Policeman Rescues Four Derby Boys From River

Four Derby boys aged ten to fourteen were rescued from drowning by Motorcycle Officer William Burke of Derby. The youths were drifting in a water-filled boat on the Hou satonic river about three miles from Derby when rescued. Names given include Stephen Safina fourteen Joseph Saffa twelve Eddie Zadlonski thirteen and Joseph Chiminiaki ten. The boys had improvised oars from barrels but lost control as their craft filled with water. Continues on Page Two.

State Should Restore Speed Limit, Eno Says

William P. Eno, president of the Eno Foundation and Fairfield traffic authority, urged Fairfield Luncheon Club that Connecticut should restore its speed limit after noting it has been raised. William Burns of 25 South Street New York was arrested in Stratford after a New York New Haven Hartford passenger train halted within two feet to avoid hitting him while he counted ties on the tracks near Stratford station. Burns admitted walking on the rails and switching tracks to continue counting, was charged with trespassing and jailed for trial tomorrow morning.

Broun Admits He Is Too Violent in World Departure

Heywood Broun, former World columnist, resigns with a farewell note to the Stratford town paper. He criticizes the Sacco Vanzetti case and says he is “too violent” and undisciplined for the World’s daily philosophy. Pulitzer states the World cannot responsibly publish such articles.

Ogden Armour Dies in London at 64 after decline

J Ogden Armour died in London at age sixty four from complications after a long illness linked to typhoid fever. Former head of Armour and Company once valued the business at a billion dollars annually before liquidating holdings and fading from prominence. Delayed Decision Foreseen As Court Hears Sacco Plea

Boston August 1 The Massachusetts Supreme Court heard arguments on Sacco and Vanzetti in a case arising from Judge Webster Thayer and Justice George Sanderson. San Diego Cal Aug 16 By Ane Associated Press two work flight records for distance and duration held by Fritz Loose were broken and one world's speed record for 2008 kilometers was set by Lieutenants Byron Connell and Herberene G. Rodd. The naval flyers completed a 20 hours flight that began Monday and ended this morning aboard the FP N 10 seaplane weighing about 11 tons with 1200 pounds sand ballast, 120 gallons of fuel oil and no fuel left in tanks.
