Leaders in large bootleg ring seized in Savannah case

Washington reports Justice officials say the largest bootlegging ring in the United States has been disrupted with top leaders in custody following wholesale arrests. Principal leader William Maur, described as head, allegedly ran a fleet of craft with connected storehouses along the Georgia and Florida coasts distributing vast quantities to markets as far north as St. Louis and Chicago. The ring allegedly imported infants and other supplies from Cuba and the Bahamas with ships anchored outside the three mile limit and distributed by cars and trains. The operation expanded from a small scheme to a major organization with an efficient intelligence department. Indictments accuse the “big four” and five others of violating the revenue act by failing to file proper returns, with Elgar linked to over 1.4 million in unreported income.
