Buffalo Herds Shrink as Extinction Fears Rise
The Phillips herd on the Missouri western bank near Fort Pierre dwindles to fewer than 2,600 as captivity preserves hold the last survivors. Once the source of most buffalo in American works, the herd declined after Phillips death, with reserves and ranch dispersals creating scattered groups across states. Buffalo hunts and circus demand faded, and experts fear the wild herd may vanish while captivity keeps a fragile population alive.
