A former New Canaan, Connecticut, airman Capt. William A. Catto was among four fliers killed when a U. S. Air Force B-47 Stratojet bomber crashed near Fairford, England. The Lake Charles Air Force base reported the incident.

In Bonn on Aug 6, East Germany unexpectedly accepted President Eisenhower's offer of U.S. food for flood victims, after previously spurning aid from across the Atlantic. Prime Minister Otto Grotewohl sent a letter to the U.S. High Commission in Germany regarding the matter.
The Milwaukee Braves defeated the New York Giants 6 to 3 ending Johnny Antonelli's 11 game win streak and shrinking the Giants NL lead to four games. Jackie Robinson starred for the Dodgers with a mix of hits as Brooklyn routed Cincinnati 8 to 1. Gil McDougald hit a grand slam for the Yankees in a 4 3 win over Detroit, keeping New York 112 games behind the Indians. American League results include Cleveland 7 Philadelphia 3 and Boston 3 Baltimore 1 in ten innings. National League results show Pittsburgh 7 St. Louis 3 and 6 5 in the second game, Philadelphia 7 Chicago 4 and Brooklyn 8 Cincinnati 1. Milwaukee 6 New York 5 completes the set.
Four thousand attended the fourth Fairfield Connecticut Pops concert at Fairfield University. Two piano duo Whitlemore and Lowe performed under conductor Daniel Saidenberg. Parking flowed smoothly with no bottlenecks. The program featured a mix of popular pieces from Dragnet to lighter works.
Washington Aug 6 The Senate voted unanimously to limit debate on its farm bill starting Monday and begin voting thereafter. Debate has stretched for three days with key issue a request for a flexible price support system to replace the current 90 percent parity supports for major crops. The next Senate session was set for noon.
An off-duty mailman, 30, shot two brothers after believing them to be Nazis. Gerald Coughlin, 25, remains critically ill while James Coughlin, 31, is in serious condition after an emergency operation at St. Francis hospital. Edward Guinan Jr., 30, fled and barricaded himself in Brookside Drug Store, later giving a signed statement to police admitting the shootings. Guinan said a letter with a cancellation slogan prompted his actions.
Hartford Aug 6 AP Governor Lodge resumes duties after a two week reserve Navy tour. He will land at Brainard Field between 5 and 5 15 p m, greeted by Lt Gov Allen, Mrs Lodge and the Governor’s two daughters Lily and Beatrice. Next week he faces a heavy schedule.
Illinois Legionnaires at the state convention approve a resolution to withdraw all support from the Girl Scouts of America over claims of un American influences in the handbook and publications. The measure targets language prioritizing United Nations citizenship over American citizenship and calls for removal of such content before resuming support. No local Chicago leaders commented as the resolution proceeds to remove Legion backing until changes are made.
Senator McCarthy claims thirty Army officers played active roles in the Peress case including a general staff mix in promoting and discharging Maj. Irving Peress. He cites a confidential Army report listing high rank officers connected to the case and says all may be called to testify. The Army has not commented.
Milford Aug 6 a sea air search for Frederick Lettner 50 and his son George 11 was ongoing after their boat motor failed. A passing cabin cruiser towed the disabled craft and a Coast Guard cutter Civil Air Patrol plane and Milford Yacht Club craft continued the search at about 6 30 p m.
Emilie Dionne, second youngest of the famous quintuplets, died at a Catholic hostel near Callander Ontario after three strokes in two days. An autopsy was ordered to determine cause as questions about polio epilepsy and post polio attacks circulated among family and clergy.
Property from Steel Inc negotiates sale to Cochrane Chevrolet at 691 State Street. The deal with Steel Cadillac Oldsmobile, 1027 Fairfield Avenue, covers Iranistan and Fairfield avenues plus the old Goodrich building at 911 Fairfield Avenue. Estimated value over 150000 dollars, about 60000 square feet. James R. Cochrane says negotiations are under way but not completed. The opposite Steel property sits at Fairfield Avenue south curb 204 feet and Iranistan Avenue west curb 113 feet, excluding a vacant gasoline station corner site.
Milford police discovered a safe blown open at Builders Supply on New Haven Avenue at 12 20 a m after a neighbor reported the burglar alarm. A neighbor heard the alarm and alerted authorities, who arrived to inspect the scene.
Senators chosen to chair the McCarthy inquiry barred TV and radio from hearings and plan a careful pace. The panel, selecting Senator Watkins as chair, aims to weed out minor charges before proceedings begin, with hearings unlikely before weeks after next.
An armed fugitive who wounded Lake Placid policemen was believed cornered in the Adirondack woods as 400 searchers closed in. A searcher had fired at the gunman near the Sterling Fox farm, but he vanished back into the woods.
Hartford August 6 AP The Public Utilities Commission has authorized Connecticut company to raise all bus fares on statewide routes after five months of deliberation. The plan to end one mile radial zone fares in Hartford New Haven Middletown and Meriden was rejected. The company must retain the existing fare structure except the approved increases.
G E announced a 20 million dollar investment to expand production in Erie Pennsylvania for direct current motors and generators. Oscar L Dunn said all integral horsepower DC motors and generators now made in Lynn Massachusetts and Fort Wayne Indiana will be centralized at the Erie plant. He cited favorable outlook for the project.
