Bingham says Connecticut avoids primary scandals
United States Senator Hiram Bingham argued in an interview that Connecticut could not have the same primary scandals seen in Pennsylvania and Illinois due to a state election law limiting a senator candidate’s expenditures to one third of a senator’s yearly salary. He declined to comment on specific disclosures about Smith, McKinley, and Brennan and disputed calls for a federal Senate probe. He also said the nomination of United States senators is a state affair and opposed seating Vare if elected.
