Philadelphia August 3 AP The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council urged President Coolidge and the State Department to end what they call despotic oppression in Mexico under President Calles. They denounced the expulsion of Americans and sanctioned a $1,000,000 education campaign to combat Soviet influence and defend liberty of conscience. The convention pressed for intervention and protection of religious rights amid Mexican church-state tensions.
Right Reverend Monsignor Patrick TF McGivney pastor of St Charles church, on his return from the national convention of the Kraighty of Columbus yesterday had nothing whatever to say concerning the Mexican church situation, nor the convention's action.
Adolph Lederer a 1923 General Assembly member won unanimous endorsement from the Ninth District Republican club for the Twenty-third district senate seat to replace Senator Howard Challenger. The endorsement followed a motion by Thomas Hungerford and a second by David Murphy with 76 attendees.
New York August. Fear of death from airtight compartments is challenged by Harry Houdini who sank into a steel coffin under a swimming pool for 90 minutes. Dr W J McConnell found no harmful effects beyond slight dizziness after release. Houdini urged belief in safety and avoiding deep breaths during the test despite concerns over carbon dioxide buildup.
Bridgeport reports a reemergence of the Phantom Stabber after months, targeting Mary Corcoran thirteen of Pogquonnock street. She and her brother walking on Lyon terrace were approached by a man who struck her in the stomach and fled. Dr Snurkensit treated the wound at Emergency hospital after the assailant allegedly vanished. Detectives under Captain John H Regan investigated while the mother found clues on the victim’s clothing. The incident followed earlier, similar attacks and the page continues on Page Two.
Rome Aug 5 AP Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W Mellon was received by Premier Mussolini in the Chigi Palace private apartment for over thirty minutes. The informal visit touched on general concerns about Italy and the United States with no official significance. A follow up talk on financial matters is anticipated, and discussions may precede broader negotiations.

Plymouth Vermont August The Coolidge farm owned by the President operates on shares. Coolidge buys seven cows and the farm is managed by Lynn ady, who provides implements and runs the farm. Profits from dairy and hay supported by vegetable supply for the President and family. Aurora Pierce, long time housekeeper, lives in the family farmhouse when they are away.
Police tied a renewed East Side Mohican gang feud to an early Sunday shooting that targeted John Mainiero and two companions near North Main and Porter streets. The two rival groups, each about fifteen members aged eighteen to twenty four, have clashed repeatedly amid a city wide pattern of brawls and threats as detectives press to dismantle the gangs.
Aug 5 Stamford report from Slate Laboratory Hartford confirms the dog that bit Josephine Chapman and another child on Nicholas Vanech last Tuesday and Wednesday was mad. Both children receive Pasteur treatment. The dog was killed with a riot gun in Belltown yesterday by Patrolman Charles Haggerty.
In Mexico City John Howard of Los Angeles a mayonnaise maker from Haverhill Mass was arrested overnight for beating his father who he claimed was a bigamist. He was held then released after U S Vice Consul McArdie investigated and a Mexican attorney affirmed the arrest lacked a warrant and substantiation amid a tangle of family charges and countercharges involving their father and other relatives.
A four year Hall Duth death mystery advances as two witnesses Julius Braun private detective and Mrs Louise Reihl former hall household maid testified about conversations heard around the time the bodies of Rev Hall and Mrs Mills were found beside a crab apple tree near TeW Brunswick. The case draws in Marie Gildea cook Willie Stevens Hall brother Minnie Clarke and others as state police seek warrants while Sen Simpason orders caution and the probe continues.
