Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird announced a cutback in the May draft call and projected total inductions for 1971 near 142,000, the lowest since 1964. He said the reduction reflects progress in Vietnamization and troop withdrawals.
Hartford AP The Connecticut State Senate on Tuesday advanced three bills to improve water quality. One requires oil or bulk petroleum shippers to post a 50000 bond to cover spill costs, released after vessels exit state waters. Another prohibits sewage discharge into Class A waterways unless treated to tertiary standards.
Admiral Elmo Zumwalt said he is studying ships staffed entirely by women, noting mixed crews are impractical due to facilities. He spoke to DACOWITS members urging more female volunteers as about 42,000 women are in uniform.
The Senate Armed Services Committee passed a bill to extend the draft for two years and let President Nixon end college deferments.
