Four Boys Held In Theft Wave In Trumbull

Four youths including two Trumbull residents and one Bridgeport resident faced charges after a wave of thefts and vandalism. David Steindl and William Lowe, both 17 of Trumbull, Peter Brockiats, 16 of Bridgeport, were released on $1,000 bond each pending May 1 circuit court. A juvenile was placed in Bridgeport Juvenile Detention awaiting action. Police said stolen items included a loaded shotgun and two rifles, a television set sold multiple times, liquor and cigarettes sold to teens, with other property recovered. Patrols investigated alongside Sgt Hoyle and Officer Coughila.

Scaffolding Fire Burns Fairfield Dorm Under Construction

Fairfield firefighters were called at 7 14 p m to a third story scaffold blaze at a Fairfield University dorm under construction. An aerial ladder was used to reach the fire. Damage is estimated at about 60 dollars. Cause remains undetermined.

Zoning Board Grants One Plea in Norwalk

The Zoning Board of Appeals granted approval to John J. Callis for a sign permit at 563 Connecticut Avenue and reserved decisions on five other applications including Richards Overton and Cart J. Labor groups protest Waterbury union recognition request

In Waterbury on April 23 labor representatives and local officials rallied outside City Hall to protest the city’s failure to recognize police and fire unions. Senator Lupton of Weston spoke in Greenwich urging a “school for legislators” to better educate lawmakers on budgets and state government. The march included about 100 labor figures and Waterbury police and firefighters, with banners calling for union recognition. Mayor Bergin declined comment.

Grass fires extinguished by Newtown fire crews

April 23 Newtown firefighters extinguished two grass blazes along the New Haven railroad tracks north of Bridgeport in the Walnut Tree Hill district. Chief Lee Bergin led a coordinated crew with assistance from Bridgeport Police and various fire unions. The alarm was sounded at 2 45 PM and 9 40 PM, with crews including Sandy Hook Fire Company and Danbury firefighters responding to the blazes burning about one half acre.

Nine Month Sentence For 21 Year Old Drug Addict

A 21 year old, Joseph Edward Passaro of 772 Washington Ave, admitted breaking into Professional Pharmacy at 157 Golden Hill Street to obtain drugs. Circuit Court Judge Francis J. O'Brien sentenced him to nine months in jail with a suspended portion after ten months served. Passaro plans to seek admission to a Federal Narcotics Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky after release. Police Capt. Dominic A. Conte said Passaro was arrested Friday following investigative leads.

Three Students Rescued Alive From Cave

Three university students were trapped in Case cave Friday night and rescued after an extensive search. Mason Huddleston Bartee and two others were guided by Ed Seagraves Dick Shuptrine and Harry Lang as civil defense teams finally reached them, discovering them on a narrow ridge near a pond after hours inside the cave. The trio reported limited water and no food, surviving by sharing a flashlight and climbing rope zones while awaiting rescue.

Carpenters End Strike in Fairfield County

In Norwalk on April 23 a new contract for Fairfield county carpenters ends a three week walkout that began April 1. The pact raises the hourly wage by 30 cents immediately and 19 cents in two later installments, lifting the old rate from 1.90 to 2.20 an hour. About 200 other area trades also walked out. negotiations continue.

The Uniteds Tuminating company reports earnings of 5,689,040 for the year ending March 31 1962, with 5,024,728 for the prior period. Earnings per share were 1.86 and 2.80 for the respective years. Operating revenues reached 46,?. including 3,648,918 from the new Derby Division. Board declares 37% cent dividend payable July 21 to stockholders of record to July 1.
