The Rev. Paul E. Freed a Greensboro Baptist evangelist said Spain promised greater religious liberty for Protestants. Interior Minister Blas Perez Gonzales said 31 closed churches may reopen and Protestants may establish churches as a definite group. Freed spoke at a Madrid press conference after three interviews and said the government would work toward more freedom for Protestants.
Booker T. Smart of New York City, 41, was arrested after a cigarette found during a stop for an auto law violation tested for marijuana. The case, held on $1,000 bond for breach of the peace, was continued to April 28 by Judge Otto A. LaMacchia. Smart also faces charges of driving without a license, running a red light, and wrong-way on a one-way street.
U S Attorney William Hart reveals four reserve Air Force officers paid bribes to alter medical records and evade active duty. At least seven others were solicited. charges will be pressed against those who paid or received bribes. The scheme involved Scott Air Force Base and the 10th Air Force region across 13 states. An officer at Scott confirms an on base sergeant is detained pending further investigation.
