Tear gas used on Rahway prison rioters in dormitory

A prison official said a slight amount of tear gas was used on 231 rebel convicts barricaded in a Rahway state prison dormitory. Guards were held as hostages as rioters unfurled a bed sheet sign threatening more gas and listening to radio news.

Prison riot at Southern Michigan Prison leaves guard hostages

In Jackson Michigan a riot in Southern Michigan Prison left one convict dead and nine wounded. About 170 mutinous inmates seized eleven guards as hostages in the No 15 cellblock while state troopers and guards battled them with tear gas and force. Injuries included three troopers and Commissioner Leonard. Damage from the unrest runs to two million dollars as authorities fear reprisals and await hostage releases. Darwin Millage died from chest wounds sustained during the morning fighting.
