A crowded jitney stalled at Kossuth street and Brirnum avenue as a speeding fire truck roared toward a fire on Elizabeth street. Passengers panicked, windows shattered, and several leaped to safety while pedestrians scrambled to push the jitney clear. Damage to the chemical truck cited at about $800. crew reassigned as investigation continues.
Stephen Purdy of 816 Broad Street was found dead at the wheel of his running car near Park Avenue and State Street last night. Dr. A By Mar salls of Emergency Hospital pronounced him dead and the body was taken to the city morgue. If death had occurred a moment later the car would have moved with a dead man at the wheel.
British authorities seized a cargo valued at about $590,000 of narcotics aboard a ship traveling from Germany to Canada and the United States. Detectives boarded the vessel in England, hidden among the crew, as the drug ring fled Halifax by hydro airplane after the seizure became known. NORTHPORT Mich April 20 Food was delivered by air today to nine men and a woman marooned and starving on Fox Island eighteen miles out in Lake Michigan. A fleet of planes faced wrecks and forced landings as they attempted the rescue. The French Briquet, owned by John Miller and led by Francis Parker with Chicago reporters and a photographer, carried two hundred pounds of supplies. The De Havilland wrecked on approach. an Army plane reported a ground sighting but may have been lost. Other planes from Selfridge and nearby fields suffered landings and gear damage as rescuers strained to reach the refugees.
A Hartford sewer committee meeting with City Engineer James A. McMicuy and Public Works Director George Coughlin laid out a tentative year plan under a $200,000 bond issue. Major lines and projects around Bridgeport and St Vincent hospitals will start after bonds release May 2, with pavement work postponed to avoid duplicated effort.

Geneva April 20. Ireland applies for membership in the League of Nations, boosting the body's reach to 53 members. Michael MacWhite, the Irish representative, says Ireland will act independently and that admission does not imply following Britain. The assembly aims to vote on membership in September after distribution to members.
Mrs Kele Mancini of Lork Rail Road avenue was killed in Danbury when a passenger train dragged her beneath its wheels as she walked with her young son through local yards. She died at Danbury hospital hours later. both legs were severed and her skull fractured after brush she carried became entangled, pulling her under the locomotive.
Mrs. Julia E McGowan of Providence was instantly killed when the sedan she rode in was side swiped at Hourne Four corners Buzzard's day. Other occupants Miss Leak L McGowan Miss May Goffohn TE O Tennell and J Sherman McGowan suffered minor injuries. The other driver's identity was being sought by State police.
