Smoky Brush Fire Closes Five Pike Lanes in Milford

A brush fire along Connecticut turnpike near Exit 34 in Milford forced state police to close five lanes and caused a two hour traffic jam. Firefighters responded at 12 03 p m and again at 3 09 p m and 4 35 p m as flames rekindled in debris along the roadside. A strong wind drove the blaze across the road and a dense smoke column kept most traffic confined to one eastbound lane until rerouting via nearby exits. No accidents were reported and crews contained the fire.
