Lieutenant Ralph Bevin Smith 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Smith of North Main street, reported missing after a March 27 flight in France, is a prisoner of war behind German lines. A British War Office cablegram confirms he is unwounded and well. Smith, ex NY Herald reporter and Columbia Journalism School graduate, was commissioned at Camp Borden in October and served with the 18th Squadron. The message does not state his exact camp or capture details.

Lieutenant Candelaria of the Argentine army crossed the Andes by airplane from Zapata Argentina to Curico Chile a distance of 180 kilometers. The machine crossed the mountains at an altitude of 23 200 metres marking the first recorded crossing by airplanes. A balloon had crossed the Andes earlier on June 24 1916 from Santiago to Uspallata.
