Milford finance panel backs a 168,518 cut from the 7,020,410 town budget and 145,122 from the Board of Education budget. Highlights include an 85,000 across the board raise for teachers and a 10,000 cut in the contingency fund plus elimination of a new dog pound.
Dr. Mark M. Mills a 40 year old atomic physicist and jet propulsion expert died when a helicopter carrying scientists crashed in a rain squall off Eniwetok atoll during a mission related to forthcoming atomic tests. Mills deputy director of UC radiation laboratory Livermore, was killed. others aboard escaped with injuries. President Eisenhower sent condolences to Mills’ family.

Chester Bowles builds a sizable edge in the Democratic nomination contest for the U.S. Senate at the state convention. Bowles supporters report 301 delegates openly favor Bowles with 105 leaning toward him, as the June convention narrows the race against Thomas J. Dodd and another former senator.
Havana police arrested 26 men in raids across the capital campaign to crush rebel plans for a general strike and street warfare. Authorities seized arms explosives shortwave gear a print shop and large quantities of rebel propaganda and medical supplies as Fidel Castro calls for total war.
A KC135 Stratotanker from Yokota Air Base Japan launched at dawn aiming for a nonstop world distance record to Madrid. The U S Air Force plans a simultaneous Tokyo to Washington leg and a 11 487 mile target as Gen Curtis LeMay previously set a long flight record.
Senator Bridges cites reports of Russian submarines prowling the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, saying they were seen near costs not within three miles of the shore. He warns of distant vessels and notes the sightings confirmed to reporters.
Capital Airlines Viscount crashed near Tri-City airport during an Easter night snowstorm killing all 47 aboard including 44 passengers and three crew. Investigators from CAB CAA and FBI probe the wreck in the corn field with on scene work continuing as officials seek cause. Captain Toe Hull of Fort Wayne and other crew named amid the tragedy.
Hartford April 7 The Southington Board of Education was ordered to provide transportation for 86 children by the State Board of Education today in an unprecedented ruling. It is the first time the state board overruled a local board in a transportation case, previously based on walking distance. Sixty Southington families appealed after a local denial for bus service.
The Connecticut State Chamber of Commerce denounces the Labor committee plan to extend unemployment benefits up to 13 weeks. In letters to legislators, Maurice W. Reid urged rejecting the proposal as harming business competitiveness. The plan would base extensions on unused prior benefits, with varying durations.
Leonard Richard, a 60 year old Bridgeport man sentenced to death in 1943 for murder, won clemency and the sentence was commuted to life. The Pardons Board set his parole date within 30 days, citing rehabilitation, education in prison, and community support. His case now moves to the parole board as he prepares for release.
April 7 the school Building committee opened a low bid of 1,167,644 from P Francini company of Derby for the new Junior High. The apparent low bid allows revising the tentative budget from 1,636,000 to 1,437,000 a reduction of 173,000. 32,000 is already appropriated.
The Common Council gave first readings to three ordinances on all night street parking power boats and towing cars. Changes included shifting parking sides on many streets and expanding Seaside village street listings with several deletions and additions ahead of the April 21 meeting.
Officials said the government will announce that unemployment rose in March by 25,489 to 5,198,000. Employment increased by 323,000 for the month to 62,311,000.
